Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to host the service myself? Both the LocalAlert server and the LocalAlert SOAP clients can be installed on a wide variety of platforms. Installation on Windows platforms is fully automated through dedicated "install wizards". The LocalAlert server must have access to an SMTP mail server. LocalAlert comes with an inbuilt SQLServer database (MSDE) at no extra cost. Alternatively, we can deploy the database in an external Oracle (8i or higher) or SQLServer2000 database as well. Will it integrate with our CRM? Yes. We provide specific integration facilities to automatically subscribe customers held in your CRM or other databases. I already use an SMS supplier. Can I configure LocalAlert to use it? Yes. We can configure LocalAlert to utilise a wide variety of SMS suppliers. Will I have a huge bill for sending text messages? Not necessarily. Text messages may be sent at "premium rate" so that subscribers receiving messages will be charged instead. What about security? All subscriber details are stored in a secure database. No direct access is allowed to the database. Nominated system administrators may access subscriber details through standard facilities provided as part of the LocalAlert service and these accounts are password controlled. In addition, all SOAP transport and web-access facilities are 128-bit encrypted. Emails are send out to individual email accounts so will not contain details or email addresses of other subscribers. Our crime database contains a postcode but no location coordinates. Can I still send targeted alerts? Yes. Ideally, all data is submitted with eastings and northings. If not, we can match a postcode to its co-ordinates and use that as the basis when restricting alerts by location. We are a community portal covering a County Council, seven separate Borough Councils and a number of other partners. Can LocalAlert provide us with a single email service? Yes. One of LocalAlert's strengths is the ability to combine data from several databases into one joined up service. Therefore we can, for example, provide a single job notification service combining information from a variety of datasources and/or organisations. |
